Columbus City Council Approves Residents To Have 4 Chickens

Last updated on Tuesday, October 11, 2016

(COLUMBUS) - The Columbus City Council has amended the city’s animal ordinance to allow residents to keep up to four chickens in their backyards.

The Republic reports the ordinance was approved 6-1 Tuesday after months of work by a 10-member citizen committee that included five people who favored the ordinance and five who opposed it. The committee was tasked with determining the proper oversight and limits to backyard chicken-raising, including addressing health issues.

The council had initially voted to ban chickens in June.

The ordinance stipulates that a chicken coop and attached chicken run can't exceed 32 square feet.
