Last updated on Monday, September 5, 2016

(GREENSBURG) - Sunday, at approximately 10:15 a.m., a head on two vehicle crash on US 421 near County Road 700 East claimed the life of a Ripley County woman and sent another driver to an Indianapolis hospital with serious injuries.

The initial investigation by Trooper Matt Holley says that a 1998 Buick passenger car being driven by 52-year-old Rebecca S. Cole, of Versailles, was traveling southbound on US 421 when the vehicle crossed the centerline into the path of a northbound 2006 GMC being driven by Roger C. Horan, age 60, Greensburg, Indiana. The vehicles collided head on just north of the Ripley-Decatur County line and came to a stop in the roadway.

As a result of the collision, Cole sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Decatur County Coroner's Office. Horan sustained serious injuries in the crash. He was airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana for treatment of his injuries. His condition is unknown at this time.

The crash remains under investigation. It is unclear at this time why Cole's vehicle crossed the centerline. It is unknown if alcohol and drugs were factors in the crash.

The roadway was closed for approximately two hours for crash investigation and cleanup.

Trp. Holley was assisted by other troopers with the Indiana State Police, the Decatur County Sheriff's Department, Greensburg Fire Department, Napoleon Fire Department, and the Decatur County Coroner's Office.
