Man Sentenced To Life In Prison After Killing Southern Indiana Couple

Last updated on Monday, September 12, 2016

(CLARK CO.) - A man who killed a southern Indiana couple has accepted a plea deal and was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Attorneys said a man accused of killing a southern Indiana couple will attend a change-of-plea hearing next week.

Austin Scott will spend the rest of his life behind bars at the Indiana Department of Corrections.

Before he was taken away, he offered an apology to the victims' family, saying "I'm really sorry," which he kept repeating.

The couple's family said they never thought their parents' killer would take responsibility for what he did.

"We weren't going to believe it until we saw it. until it actually happened, then we were going to think it's not going to happen," victim's daughter Suz-E Schmelz said.

Scott changed his plea from not guilty to guilty, admitting to brutally beating Asenath Arnold to death and stabbing Gary Henderson at their Harrison County home in 2013. Scott was 18 at the time. They broke into the home, killed the couple and took off with guns, money and credit cards.

Scott is one of two men who were charged in the case. As part of his plea deal, Scott won't be able to appeal his sentence.

The prosecutor who handled his case said Scott should be going to the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility within 24 hours.

His co-defendant, Kevin Schuler, will stand trial in January.
