(DUNKIRK) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a personal injury ATV crash that occurred Monday evening.

Larry Blankenship, 50, of Dunkirk, was operating a Suzuki 4x4 ATV on private property when the crash occurred. Blankenship was the only person injured and he was not wearing any protective gear.

Conservation Officers responded to the 2500 block of South 800 East in Blackford County where they located Blankenship pinned underneath the ATV and unconscious. The preliminary investigation revealed that Blankenship was operating the ATV in a gravel driveway and then it flipped as he attempted a turn. High rates of speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors to the crash.

Blankenship was transported to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie by ambulance. There he was treated for injuries believed to be serious but non-life threatening and was last known to be in stable condition. Assisting Conservation Officers on scene were Blackford County Sheriff Department, Dunkirk Police Department, and Blackford County EMS.

Indiana Conservation Officers would like to remind people that it is illegal and extremely dangerous to consume alcohol while operating an ATV. Also, officers would like to encourage everyone recreating or working with an ATV to don a helmet before riding.
