(WASHINGTON, DC) - Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, co-sponsored legislation that would prohibit the Obama Administration from making future ransom payments to Iran and would ensure that any funds provided to Iran are not used for terrorism.

In January, the Obama Administration delivered a $400 million cash payment to Iran that directly coincided with the release of a group of U.S. hostages. News reports this week confirm that the administration sent a total of $1.7 billion in cash to Iran earlier this year.

"Iran continues to sow seeds of discord in the Middle East and cannot be believed or trusted," said Coats. "Unfortunately, the Obama Administration continues to double down on its mistaken belief that Iran will change. I strongly support this legislation to ensure no more dollars from American taxpayers are paid to this dangerous regime."

The No Ransom Payments Act was introduced by Senator Marco Rubio (R-Florida). Visit http://www.rubio.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=0F4AB24C-3B53-4211-90DF-092E13E5A10A to read more about this legislation.
