Woman Shot With Nailgun 8 Times During Torture Case

Last updated on Thursday, August 18, 2016

(MUNCIE) - Prosecutors filed more than two dozen charges against two men accused of kidnapping and torturing three people.

FOX 59 repots, police arrested Robert A. Walton, 55, and Benitez L. McCullum last week after investigators said they held two women and a man against their will at a car detailing garage on North Broadway Avenue. The suspects used zip ties and duct tape to restrain the victims and then beat them for hours.

The investigation began in the early morning hours of Aug. 11 after a woman showed up at a gas station with duct tape around her neck and told the clerk someone was trying to kill her. She told police she'd been held captive with two other people but managed to escape.

She identified her captors as "Benny" (McCullum) and "Bob" (Walton). The woman told police she escaped because she was sweating so much that she was able to break the duct tape around her neck and hands.

Police arrived at the business where they found the other two victims. According to court documents, the second female victim couldn't walk because she'd been shot "multiple times" in the leg with a nail gun. The woman had to have eight nails surgically removed from her leg; some of the nails penetrated all the way to the bone, police said.

The male victim had blurred vision after being hit in the head with a shovel, according to court documents.

Police found Walton at the business and interviewed him. Walton told investigators that he and McCullum lured all three victims into the garage and then tied them up. He said McCullum told him to use the nail gun.

Police later arrested McCullum at a home. He told police he'd been at the business but "couldn't remember what happened due to his alcohol consumption," court documents said.

Walton faces 13 charges in the case, including criminal confinement, aggravated battery, battery by means of a deadly weapon and intimidation.

McCullum faces 12 counts, including criminal confinement, battery by means of a deadly weapon, intimidation and aiding, inducing, or causing aggravated battery.

Court documents didn't shed light on the motive behind the kidnappings.
