Vigo County Health Department Deams Sarah Scott Middle School Unfit Because Of Bats

(TERRE HAUTE) - The Vigo County Health Department asked Vigo County School Corporation Tuesday morning to evacuate both students and staff members from Sarah Scott Middle School due to a bat infestation.

On Aug. 11 the gym at Sarah Scott was be closed off due to bats found in the gym.

Officials say issues with the building's envelopes have made entry points for bats. After officials found some in the gym area, they closed it off to students as a precaution.

But then on Tuesday morning during a commissioners meeting, the Vigo County Health Department advised the school corporation that everyone be removed from the building because additional bats had been found.

Joni Wise, with the health department, says a bat was found Monday morning in the cafeteria.

Wise stated it has been advised that everyone be removed from the building 'as soon as possible' as the building is considered unfit.

Wise also told News 10 that the school corporation has been working with with a company that is licensed to remove the bats.
