(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) has named Dennis L. Stover, a longtime leader in HIV work in Indiana, Michigan and Washington, D.C., as director of the agency's HIV/STD Division. Stover will begin work Sept. 12.

Stover has served as executive director of the Indiana Community AIDS Action Network and as director of acquired diseases for ISDH, where he also served as an assistant commissioner overseeing administrative services from 1994-95. He worked as a vice president of the National AIDS Fund and as executive director for the Michigan AIDS Fund in the 1990s. His career also includes work in philanthropy and as an educator, most recently as a vice chancellor at the University of South Florida Sarasota Manatee.

"Protecting Hoosiers from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases is a critical role of public health, and we are thrilled to have someone of Dennis Stover's caliber lead our team," said State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams, M.D., M.P.H. "His knowledge of ISDH and of the Indiana HIV community make him the perfect selection for this vital role."

Betty Wilson, president and chief executive officer of The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis, praised Stover's hiring.

"The selection of Dennis Stover as director of the HIV/STD division is terrific for our state," Wilson said. "He brings a wealth of knowledge about the issues of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. He has experience, passion and commitment to our constituents' wellbeing. And he has well-documented leadership skills."

Stover said he looks forward to returning to Indiana and to ISDH.

"I am very excited to bring my experience and passion back home," Stover said. "Leaders from across the state have been very committed to this fight, and I hope that we can further reduce disease in our state by working together."

The HIV/STD division works to promote public health and enhance Hoosiers' quality of life through the prevention and treatment of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. It includes experts in data collection and analysis, disease detection, care coordination and prevention.
