Woman Attacked Inside Newburgh Movie Theater

Last updated on Monday, July 18, 2016

(NEWBURGH) - A fun trip to a movie theater in Newburgh turned dangerous for one mother and her son.

Warrick County deputies say she was attacked and now the search is on to find the suspect.

It happened at Showplace Cinemas,Thursday around 5 p.m.

WFIE reports, the woman and her young son were about to watch the movie The Shallows. The two were the only people in that particular theater at the time.

The woman told deputies a man approached her right before the movie started, showing her an inappropriate text on his phone that stated if she didn't start touching him, he was going to attack her.

After she screamed "No!" in response to the text, she grabbed her son and got up to leave. That's when the man attacked her from behind, cornering her against the stair railing.

Deputies say she then screamed and tried elbowing the man. The male then took off and she called 911.

The alleged attacker is a light skinned black male in his early 20s, and she didn't know who he was. He was last seen wearing a black Adidas hoodie and low rising jeans.

No other information was given.

"Officers were able to interview other people on the scene that gave a good description that matched what she gave, they also saw this subject," said Warrick Co. Chief Deputy Michael Wilder. "We believe he attended another movie. So, if anybody saw somebody matching that description, we ask to call our sheriff's department. Those tips could possibly help us solve this case."

Showplace Cinemas had no comment on the incident.
