Officials Investigating Sheen Found On Tippecanoe River

Last updated on Tuesday, July 19, 2016

(WINAMAC) - Indiana environmental officials are asking people to stay away from the Tippecanoe River in the Winamac area as they investigate a sheen on the water.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said early Saturday that the 4 mile-long sheen was reported Friday in the river in Pulaski County.

They say it's been contained and is being cleaned. However they're asking residents, fishermen, boaters, Tippecanoe River State Park visitors and Winamac festival attendees to avoid using the river downstream of the state park until further notice.

IDEM communications director Courtney Arango says the substance in the river is dissipating and diluting. She hopes to have the substance identified when results of chemical testing are returned this week.
