Michigan City Man In Critical Condition After Nearly Drowning At Stone Lake

(LAPORTE CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a near drowning incident that occurred on Stone Lake Sunday evening at approximately 7:18 p.m.

Police say 26-year-old Terry Harrell of Michigan City, IN and his friend Michael Beans were fishing from kayaks approximately 50 feet from shore near the 200 block of Lakeshore Drive. Witnesses observed Harrell struggling in the water after his 10 foot kayak capsized.

Witnesses saw Beans attempt to save Harrell, but he quickly disappeared under the water. A 911 call was made while several witnesses swam from shore out to Beans in an attempt to locate Harrell.

LaPorte City Fire Department arrived on scene shortly after the 911 call and located Harrell in 7 feet of water at 7:33 p.m. Harrell was revived by LaPorte County EMS while transporting him to LaPorte Hospital where he currently remains in critical condition.

Harrell was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.
