Last updated on Friday, July 8, 2016

(LAKE CO.) - A Hobart man jumped off the bridge on I-65 northbound at the 260 mile marker (this is between the I-80/94 and I-80/90 interchange) after he crashed his car late Tuesday night.

According to Indiana State Police Trooper Brandon Alberts at approximately 11:05 p.m., Tuesday, a 2016 Chevrolet Sonic, driven by 32-year-old Jacob Heino, of Hobart, was northbound on I-65 at the 260 mile marker when he struck the inner concrete barrier wall. A witness stated that the Sonic had been traveling at a high-rate of speed. The Sonic became disabled in the left lane.

Two female passengers in the car stated that Heino fled from the car and jumped off the bridge on the east side of the road.

Troopers located Heino where it is estimated he fell about 42 feet. Medical assistance was called immediately. Heino remained conscious and alert but suffered numerous injuries. He was transported to North lake Methodist Hospital in Gary. Both passengers were uninjured.

It is believed narcotics may have been used, toxicology results are pending.
