(INDIANAPOLIS) - Every Hoosier has a right to good health, but many Indiana residents aren’t as healthy as they could be because they haven’t visited a healthcare provider recently.
The 2016 INShape Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair offers Hoosiers a chance to learn about their health and how to improve it through free screenings. The health fair, held in conjunction with Indiana Black Expo's Summer Celebration, runs from July 14-17 at the Indiana Convention Center, Hall F, in downtown Indianapolis. This year's theme is "Good Health is Contagious -- Catch It."
"Knowing your health status and taking steps to improve it can prevent chronic disease and lead to longer lives," said State Health Commissioner Jerome Adams, M.D., M.P.H. "The INShape Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair presents a great opportunity to access screenings, education and resources that will help Hoosiers of all ages."
Health fair attendees will receive more than $1,500 worth of free screenings, including checks of blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol levels, testing for syphilis and HIV (Saturday only), analysis of body mass index, and prostate, vision and dental assessments. Additionally, staff will offer stroke risk assessments and lead testing for children. There will also be cooking demonstrations and healthy activities. Special guests at the health fair include Chef Curtis Aikens and former NBA All-Star and Hall-of-Famer Dominique Wilkins on Saturday and Sunday.
Prior to the health fair, a health forum will be held on Thursday, July 14, at 12 p.m. in rooms 143-145 of the Indiana Convention Center. It will feature guest speakers Lisa Hayes, Gennesaret Free Clinics; Nadia Miller, Pink-4-Ever; and Tisha Reid of Uplift Church. The opening ceremonies will begin at 3 p.m. with Dr. Adams, former Indianapolis DJ Tony Lamonte and dancer Traci Bishop.
The health fair is free on opening day. The Family and Social Services Administration will provide free transportation to the health fair for seniors and disabled individuals on July 14 only from various points in the city. The deadline for free transportation registration is 5 p.m. on Monday, July 11. Individuals interested in registering and finding out the pick-up points and times should call 317-232-3036 or email inomh@isdh.in.gov.
On other days, admission to the health fair is included in admission to Indiana Black Expo's Summer Celebration.
