Armed Robbery Suspect Wounded In Anderson

(ANDERSON) - An armed robbery suspect was wounded with a non-life threatening injury, around 8:20 a.m. Monday, after a trooper walked into a gas station and was informed by clerks that the man just leaving had robbed the station while armed with a handgun.

The trooper, who was in full uniform, walked outside the station, located at 53rd and MLK in Anderson, and ordered the suspect, who was getting into his car, a 2002 Jaguar, to stop.

Instead of stopping, the suspect continued to leave, pointing a handgun at the officer out his car window. The officer fired on the suspect, 22-year-old Ricky B. Zimmerman, of Pendleton, hitting him through both wrists as he pointed the handgun at the officer. Zimmerman's car continued across MLK Blvd, where it struck a northbound Honda Civic before coming to rest on the west side of the south bound lanes.

The driver of the Honda Civic, Jacob A. Guest, 32, of Indianapolis, was uninjured. The trooper and arriving officers rendered first aid until Anderson Fire- EMS arrived. Zimmerman was transported to St. Vincent's Hospital in Anderson where he is being treated for his non-life threatening injury.

The handgun and money, believed to be from the armed robbery, have been recovered at the scene. The trooper involved in the incident was uninjured. The investigation is ongoing, with charges against Zimmerman possibly being filed as early as today.

MLK Blvd. remains closed as Crime Scene Technicians process the scene.The Indiana State Police are being assisted at the scene by the Anderson Police Department, Anderson Fire Department, the Madison County Prosecutor's Office and Madison County EMA.
