Missing Lafayette School Teacher Found Near Pond

Last updated on Thursday, June 23, 2016

(LAFAYETTE) - A Lafayette school teacher missing for more than 24 hours has been found alive and will apparently be okay, police say.

Krista Perdue, a second grade teacher at Woodland Elementary School, had last been seen late Sunday or early Monday. Crews had been searching a pond near Perdue's home when attention moved to a small wooded area near the water. A team of rescuers quickly moved to the trees, then surrounded a stretcher, which they carried back up the hill to a waiting ambulance.

"After going up to her and shaking her a little bit and getting her to respond, she was able to open her eyes and you could tell she was able to understand what we were saying to her, but her verbal communication was a challenge," said Tippecanoe County Sheriff Barry Richard.

Police said the teacher was dehydrated and incoherent and likely would not have survived much longer. The sheriff's department say 42-year-old mother was in serious condition and was being checked out at the hospital, but is expected to be okay.

Perdue's husband, Sam, was in the front seat of one of the sheriff's deputies cars as they left the scene with the ambulance.

Perdue was last seen late Sunday or possibly early Monday. Sam Perdue told deputies that Krista was sick Sunday and when he went to check on her she was gone. He teaches at a different school from his wife.

Deputies say Krista Perdue left everything behind: her purse, car keys, house keys and vehicle. That's something that worried investigators.
