Last updated on Friday, June 3, 2016

(PORTER CO.) - A Chesterton man died, late Wednesday evening, when he crashed the motorcycle he was driving while fleeing police.

According to Indiana State Trooper Paul Arnold revealed at approximately 11:55 p.m., the Indiana State Police were called to the scene of US 20 west to I-94 west bound ramp to investigate a fatal crash involving a blue 1994 Honda motorcycle driven by 48-year-old Michael James Jozwiak, of Chesterton.

A deputy with the Porter County Sheriff's Department had tried to stop the motorcycle traveling westbound on US 20 from Wagner Road in Chesterton for a traffic violation earlier when Jozwiak took off.

The motorcycle lost control on US 20 west bound to the I-94 west bound ramp, was ejected off, and landed on the I-94 westbound to US 20 off ramp.

Jozwiak was not wearing a helmet and CPR was performed until an ambulance arrived. He was taken to Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso where he died from his injuries.

It is unknown if alcohol/drugs were involved pending a toxicology report. Family has been notified.

The ramps at that location were closed until approximately 2:20 a.m., for reconstruction and investigation of the crash, removal of the injured and the motorcycle.
