28 Residents Homeless Following Apartment Complex Fire

Last updated on Monday, June 27, 2016

(COLUMBUS) - 28 people are without a home and much of their belongings after an apartment complex fire in Columbus Saturday night.

The fire was at the Stonegate Apartments on Stonegate Drive. Many residents were evacuating by the time firefighters got to the two-story complex that contained 12 apartment units.

Capt. Michael Wilson with the Columbus Fire Department says the roof collapsed due to the flames, as firefighters were unable to successfully fight the fire from inside the building. No firefighters were hurt, and everyone who lived at the complex made it out safely, though they likely lost much of what they owned.

Wilson says investigators don't know what caused the fire.

The Red Cross is helping residents find temporary housing, and the Salvation Army is providing help as well.
