(VINCENNES) - The Vincennes Sun-Commerical reports that a student at Lincoln High School has been arrested by city police and charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking a teacher at the high school Wednesday afternoon.

City police chief Dusty Luking said the 16-year-old boy is currently being held at the Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village on charges of attempted murder, robbery, battery with serious bodily injury, criminal confinement and strangulation.

School officials say the boy, a special needs student, re-entered the high school after dismissal Wednesday and attacked the teacher, who is now being treated for her injuries at an Evansville hospital.

Both police and school officials have declined to identify the injured teacher, but social media accounts indicate it is Cheryl Clemens, a long-time special education teacher with the VCSC.

Police say they arrived at the school about 4:30 p.m. where school staff led them to the teacher who was "badly beaten" and "semi-conscious." She was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital where she was later transferred to Evansville.

Luking said she is currently listed in stable condition in an ICU trauma unit.

According to a press release issued Thursday, high school staff had subdued the student prior to police officers' arrival. He was taken to the school office where he was later transported to the Vincennes Police Department for questioning.

Police say the boy and the teacher did know one another.

Vincennes Community School Corp. Greg Parsley said in a statement issued Thursday that the school corporation is cooperating with the ongoing investigation, and he asked that people keep the teacher in their "thoughts and prayers."

Luking said the boy will remain at the youth village until he makes his first appearance in court, which is likely to be sometime in the next 48 hours.
