Southern Indiana School District Approves Transgender Protection For Students, Staff

Last updated on Thursday, May 12, 2016

(NEW ALBANY) - A southern Indiana school district has approved language for its handbook offering protections to transgender students and employees.

The News and Tribune reports that the New Albany-Floyd County Consolidated School Corp.'s board of trustees unanimously approved the changes at its meeting Monday.

The district's assistant superintendent, Bill Briscoe, says an attorney who reviewed the document recommended including adding the language. Briscoe said Tuesday that the language is in line with recommendations from the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.

Briscoe says the protections have "always been there, but this is the first time it's been written down."

Board of trustees member Lee Ann Wiseheart brought up the subject for more discussion during Monday's meeting. Wiseheart said she's "glad that's in there."
