South Bend Woman Sentenced To 80 Years For Killing Infant Son, Injuring Daughter

Last updated on Monday, May 16, 2016

(SOUTH BEND) - A South Bend woman has been sentenced to 80 years in prison for killing her infant son and gravely injuring her daughter.

A jury found 22-year-old Nyesha Crockett guilty of murder, battery, aggravated battery and child neglect last month. She was sentenced Friday in St. Joseph Superior Court.

Crockett was arrested in September 2014 for the death of her 11-month-old son Micahyah. Authorities said he died from injuries consistent with suffocation.

Police then re-investigated an injury to Crockett's 1-year-old daughter Alaiyah that occurred seven months earlier and left the girl in a coma. The incident originally had been classified as an accident.

Prosecutors say Crockett was angry in both cases because the children's father had left the home to go out with his friends.
