Purdue University Airport Won't See Commercial Flights Anytime Soon

Last updated on Tuesday, May 10, 2016

(WEST LAFAYETTE) - Purdue University Airport’s runways are the second-busiest in Indiana, but the facility’s departing director says she doesn’t expect the return of commercial flights anytime soon.

Airport director Betty Stansbury tells the Lafayette Journal & Courier that the 20-year master plan for the airport doesn't make contingencies for commercial air service. She doesn't think that will change after she leaves to become executive director of The Pitt-Greenville Airport in North Carolina.

Stansbury says it's difficult to attract interest from airlines since the airport's last commercial flight in 2004 followed a long string of carriers unable to make a profit.

The airport has been focusing on physical improvements, research and education, rather than courting commercial airlines.
