Nutrition Labels On Food To Be Updated

Last updated on Tuesday, May 24, 2016

(UNDATED) - For the first time in more than 20 years, a major update to the labels that tell you what nutrients are in the food you eat is happening.

First Lady Michelle Obama announced the changes at an annual Nutrition Summit in Washington saying, "You will no longer need a microscope, a calculator or a degree in nutrition to figure out whether the food that you're buying is actually good for our kids."

More than 800 thousand food and drinks in the U.S. carry nutrition facts labels and under the new guidelines, calories will now be listed in bigger, bolder type.

Also under the new guidelines manufacturers will be required to list "more realistic" serving sizes so consumers will have a better idea of how products affect their diets.

The new labels will be in stores within the next two years.
