Methane Gas Leak Displaces Princeton Residents

Last updated on Tuesday, May 3, 2016

(PRINCETON) - Methane gas apparently leaking from an old coal mine has displaced about 30 residents of a Princeton apartment complex.

The Princeton Daily Clarion reports tenants of the Tower Manor Apartments were evacuated Friday night.

More than half took temporary shelter at the Gibson County Fairgrounds.

Fire officials say it's possible the gas may be coming from an abandoned coal mine below the property.

State officials say an earthquake last Thursday may have allowed the gas to seep to the surface.

Princeton Mayor Brad Schmitt says the city will meet with officials from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources today to continue the investigation.
