(UNDATED) - Improvements are coming to Interlake and Redbird state riding areas, which offer off-road vehicle trails for motorized recreation.

Interlake, in Lynnville, and Redbird, in Linton, are former coal mines managed by the DNR Division of Outdoor Recreation for off-road riding. Combined, they offer almost 5,000 acres and dozens of miles of trails for off-road motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles, 4x4s and more. The properties are also open to non-motorized recreation, such as hiking and mushroom hunting.

Beginning May 27, the Interlake office will be open Friday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT. Permits and passes will be available for sale, and staff can answer questions.

Beginning July 1, the Interlake gatehouse will be staffed, and employees will begin collecting gate fees. The fee structure will be the same as what is charged at Redbird.

July 1 also will mark the transition of the current motorized trail-use discount card to an Annual Motorized Trail Use permit. These annual permits will allow unlimited motorized trail use at both Interlake and Redbird. The cost of the annual permit will be $75. The permits are per individual. An Annual Motorized Trail Use permit purchased in 2016 will be valid until Dec. 31, 2017.

Also on July 1, DNR Outdoor Recreation will offer the new Annual Out-Of-State Motorized Trail Use permit. The permit (decal) will allow non-registered, out-of-state off-road vehicles (ORVs) to be driven on the trails at both Interlake and Redbird SRAs. It is specific to individual ORVs and DNR properties.

The new permit will allow visitors to come directly to the property rather than having to register their ORV at an Indiana BMV location. The new permit does not allow on-road use in Indiana.

The cost of the annual permit will be $20 per ORV. An Out-Of-State Motorized Trail Use permit purchased in 2016 will be valid until Dec. 31, 2017.

All previously purchased motorized trail-use discount cards will be honored.
For those who don't want to buy an annual pass, day passes for trail use will also be available. The daily motorized trail-use fee is $10 per vehicle that will use the motorized trails. For example, a truck hauling four ATVs will be charged $40. This fee includes the normal daily gate entrance.

Visitors with multiple ORVs may use a combination of an annual motorized trail-use permit(s) and payment. For example, a group of four ORVs could present one annual permit and pay $30 for the remaining ORVs.

For non-motorized recreation, all normal DNR park rates and fees apply. Annual park entrance permits are accepted at Interlake SRA.

Fees are subject to change.
