Last updated on Wednesday, April 13, 2016

(VINCENNES) - Knox County police are looking for 58-year-old Gary Dunt, 58 of Vincennes, after police found several abandoned dogs inside a home in the 6700 block of North Camp Arthur Road.

The dogs were found inside the home by the new property owner on April 1.

When the officer arrived they found two dead dogs in a detached garage and an estimated 10 severely malnourished and sick dogs that were confined inside the home.

The home and garage smelled of ammonia and there was a "was detected inside the home and "large amounts of debris was located throughout both structures."

The Indiana State Board of Animal Health and the Vincennes Animal Shelter were called to the scene, and additional search was conducted of the property. Two more dogs were found dead in the garage and additional dogs were found bolted outside "eating whatever they could find."

"It was obvious the dogs had not been provided any food or water for an extended period," Sheriff Morris said in a press release.

A trash bag containing the decomposing remains of another dog was found in a small outbuilding and a skull of another dog was located in the front yard.

In total, 11 dogs were taken to the Vincennes Animal Shelter for emergency care and will remain there until they are healthy enough to be adopted out.

Police say they need the public's help in locating Dunt, who is facing 11 counts of animal cruelty, 11 counts of abandonment and neglect of an animal and 11 counts of harboring non-immunized dogs.

A bond will be issued by the Vincennes Animal Shelter for reimbursement of care of the dogs.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office asks those in the community to report all types of animal neglect and abuse to their department by calling (812) 882-1502.
