(INDIANAPOLIS) - The individual income tax filing deadline of April 18 has passed. Taxpayers who missed the deadline must still file their individual income tax returns and pay any tax owed to minimize penalty and interest.

Taxpayers filing after the deadline should consider doing so electronically. Electronically-filed returns generally are processed within two weeks, while paper returns can take up to 12 weeks to process.

Indiana freefile (INfreefile), the Indiana Department of Revenue's free online filing program, is still available for qualified taxpayers to file federal and state taxes. Taxpayers can visit to see if they qualify.

Taxpayers can pay tax owed online through the department's secure ePay site at

If taxpayers cannot pay the full amount of tax due, they should pay as much as possible to minimize penalty and interest charges. The department will send a bill for the remainder of the amount due, including penalty and current interest. After receiving the bill, taxpayers can visit to see if they qualify for payment plans. Taxpayers qualify if they owe more than $100 and can pay at least 20 percent down.

Remember, taxpayers who filed for extensions of time to file must file their individual income tax returns and pay any remaining tax owed by November 14, 2016.

Taxpayers who need assistance or have any questions about their tax returns or making payments, can contact the department at (317) 232-2240.
