(UNDATED) - The Arbor Day Foundation is honoring the Indiana Association for Education of Young Children at the 2016 Arbor Day Awards on April 30th, with the Rachel Carson Award in honor of the organizations commitment to infusing nature in youth education.
The Rachel Carson Award recognizes programs, individuals or organizations whose exemplary leadership and efforts guide the nurturing of young children's inborn sense of wonder about the natural world.
The Indiana Association for Education of Young Children is a statewide, nonprofit organization with 16 chapters and more than 2,000 members. The association has a 51-year history of promoting and supporting quality care and education for all young children, birth through age eight, in Indiana.
Through their ongoing research, the Indiana Association for Education of Young Children has found that nature provides multiple learning and development benefits for the children for which they serve. Because of this, the association supports and promotes access to quality education, not only in the classroom, but also through nature.
These efforts are being witnessed in new, nature-rich outdoor classrooms springing up all over the state, encouraging educators to continue to connect their pupils with nature. In these uniquely designed outdoor classrooms, children are able to interact outdoors and develop skills through their experiences. Additionally, the organization has trained local professionals and formed partnerships getting local communities involved in tree plantings and advanced education techniques.
The Indiana Association for Education of Young Children is one of 17 individuals, organizations and companies recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation at the annual Arbor Day Awards ceremony held at Lied Lodge & Conference Center in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the inspiring and life-changing work of leading environmental stewards and tree planters through the Annual Arbor Day Awards. Former award winners include the late Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley and the United States Forest Service.
