(EVANSVILLE) - An intoxicated driver rear-ended a deputy’s vehicle while the deputy was responding to an overturned semi on Interstate-64, according to the sheriff’s office.
A FedEx driver fell asleep at the wheel Saturday around 4:30 a.m. The semi was traveling east on I-64 when the semi, along with the two attached trailers, overturned.
Just a little more than an hour an hour later, 32-year-old Jacob David Humphrey was headed west and failed to see the flashing lights from the deputy's vehicle. Humphrey's 2013 Kia Sol struck the rear of the deputy's vehicle. The deputy was not in his vehicle at the time of the collision.
Deputies say Humphrey failed a series of field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer test indicated he was intoxicated. His blood-alcohol content was .185.
Humphrey was transported to the Vanderburgh County Jail, where he refused to take a certified breath test.
The semi-truck driver who complained of shoulder pain was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.
Traffic was reduced to one lane briefly. It was reopened by 9 a.m.
