Last updated on Tuesday, March 29, 2016

(DECATUR CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating the death of a woman after her off road vehicle struck a tree Sunday evening.

At approximately 5:33 p.m., 58-year-old Mary Romans, was traveling south on County Road 700 West in Westport when she veered off the roadway to the west, then the east. Once off the roadway on the east side, the ORV turned sideways facing east, still traveling south, where it collided with a tree on the east side of the roadway.

Mary Romans was ejected from the ORV. She was not wearing a safety belt.

In the passenger seat was Mary's grandson, 10-year-old Jacob Lorenz, who was pinned inside the vehicle. Jacob's seat belt kept him inside the ORV; but still suffered serious injuries.

Westport Fire Department and Decatur County EMS arrived on scene shortly after, where they attempted field medical treatment on Mary and Jacob.

Indiana Conservation Officers, Indiana State Police and local Law Enforcement Officials arrived on scene shortly after and are currently investigating the accident.

Decatur County Coroner arrived and pronounced Mary deceased at the scene. Jacob was air lifted to Riley Hospital for further medical treatment; his status is unknown at this time.

Indiana Conservation Officers strongly encourage riders to wear a helmet and necessary safety equipment when operating an ORV.
