Teen Arrested After Taking Loaded Gun To Evansville's Eastland Mall

Last updated on Wednesday, March 30, 2016

(EVANSVILLE) - Police say a teenager is in custody after he was caught with a loaded gun at Eastland Mall in Evansville.

WFIE reports the teen already has quite an extensive criminal history. He has six felony arrests and is a convicted felon at just 14-years-old.

Police say the incident started when a police officer at the mall saw a group of teens that he recognized from previous thefts, and started watching them. That's when the 14-year-old went to a trash can and put something in it.

A short time later he retrieved that item from the trashcan, looking around to make sure no one was watching.

The officer tried to stop the suspect as he left the mall, but he took of running. He was caught after he threw a loaded handgun into the grass.

"The age of our offenders is getting younger and younger, and this is a prime example," said Sergeant Jason Cullum with EPD. "Here we have a 14-year-old who has numerous felony arrests and a felony conviction and is going to a public space with a loaded handgun and is running from the police when he gets stopped. Those are the individuals, unfortunately, that we will be talking six or seven years form now about the other situations."

The teen is now facing several charges including possession of a firearm by a felon and resisting law enforcement.
