Senator Brent Steele Makes Statement Following Conclusion Of 2016 Legislative Session

Last updated on Friday, March 11, 2016

(STATEHOUSE) - “This session, the Indiana General Assembly passed several important measures for the state of Indiana.

"Many states across the country, including Indiana, are experiencing road funding issues. As a result, lawmakers passed House Enrolled Act 1001 and Senate Enrolled Act 67. These two bills will work in conjunction with one another to provide $1 billion in new state and local road funding over the next two years without raising taxes or creating new debt."

"One initiative I authored that passed the legislature and has already been signed by the governor was Senate Enrolled Act 91, which allows Indiana adoptees born between 1941 and 1994 to access their previously-sealed birth records. This measure expands opportunities for adopted Hoosiers seeking more information on their health and heritage, while ensuring that birthparents who choose to maintain their privacy are protected.

"Another bill I authored this year was Senate Enrolled Act 28, which updates the payment cap for medical malpractice victims the first time since 1998. The new total, maximum compensation under SEA 28 would be $1.65 million in 2017, and would increase to $1.8 million in 2019.

"I am proud that both of these important measures advanced through the legislature during my last year as a state senator. I will truly miss serving the Hoosiers in Senate District 44."
