Governor Considering Plastic Bag Bill

Last updated on Wednesday, March 16, 2016

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Governor Pence has not said whether or not he will sign the ‘plastic bag bill.’

That's House Bill 1053, which would make it illegal for local governments to bar grocery and other stores from using plastic bags.

Governments would also be barred from making any other restrictions on bags, boxes or cups if Pence signs the bill into law.

Supporters say the bill is an effort to ensure laws that govern businesses are uniform across the state. They also are trying to preempt a law such as California's recent ban on the use of plastic bags by grocery and department stores. Opponents say local governments should be allowed to set whatever policies they wish.
