The final leg of the new Interstate 69 will be built through Johnson County, state transportation officials announced on Tuesday.

The interstate will be constructed along the path of State Road 37 from Martinsville through the Center Grove area, connecting with Interstate 465.

State officials had been studying five routes from Martinsville to Indianapolis for the final segment of Interstate 69. They were expected to further narrow the number of possible routes before selecting the best option in early 2017.

Instead, they have already settled on the State Road 37 route through Johnson County and Perry Township in southern Marion County.

Studies have shown it would reduce crashes and congestion the most, impact less forest and farm acreage and cut travel time to the airport significantly. But the path that would pass through Perry Township and White River Township also impacts the most businesses, which has been a concern raised by residents, businesses owners and lawmakers.

The route would also have the greatest economic impact during a 20-year period, transportation officials said Tuesday.
