(TUCSON, Ariz.) - Tucson police are at odds with a small Indiana town over a Tommy gun taken from an outlaw more than 80 years ago.
The Arizona Daily Star reports that Tucson police say the Colt Thompson submachine gun taken when they arrested John Dillinger is an important part of the city's history. The weapon is stored behind glass at police headquarters.
But officials in Peru, Indiana, told a local newspaper that they believe Dillinger and his gang took the gun from Peru police during a 1933 robbery. They say the gun's serial number can prove their claim.
Tucson Sgt. Pete Dugan says Peru officials have asked for the gun. He argues that figuring out the origin of each of the guns taken from Dillinger and his accomplices would be difficult.
