Last updated on Wednesday, February 3, 2016

(LAGRANGE) - Investigators from the Indiana State Police in Fort Wayne are investigating the death of a 41-year-old male inmate of the LaGrange County Jail after he was found unconscious and unresponsive in his cell Monday morning.

Preliminary investigation by Detective Deven Hostetler indicated that Monday at approximately 11:40 a.m., Confinement Officers found James P. Denaway, of Bristol, unconscious and unresponsive in his cell.

They immediately entered and began performing life saving measures until LaGrange County EMS arrived minutes later. Denaway was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The LaGrange County Sheriff Department requested that a Detective from the Indiana State Police conduct the subsequent investigation.

An autopsy was conducted Tuesday morning and LaGrange County Coroner Randy Packer ruled the cause of Denaway's death as asphyxiation.

Foul play is not suspected and has been ruled out.
