(MUNCIE) - 70-year-old Dorsel Goings of Summitville fell through the ice on a private pond on the northeast side of Muncie today. He was taken by ambulance to Ball Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on Friday.

Indiana Conservation Officers responded to a call from the Delaware County Sheriff's Office Dispatch following a 911 call of a possible person falling through the ice.

Officers received the calls at 5:22 p.m.

ICO divers recovered Goings from the water at 6:22 p.m., and he was pronounced dead at Ball Memorial at 7:09 p.m.

Goings was ice fishing on a private pond in the area of State Road 67 and State Road 3, on the northeast side of Muncie. He was last observed around 11:00 am by a local resident. Another local resident noticed his gear laying on the ice with no sign of Goings. She tried to call Goings, and when she couldn't reach him, she called 911.

The recovery was a joint effort with the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, Hamilton Fire, Muncie Fire, Delaware County EMS, Indiana State Police, the Eaton Police Department, and the Delaware County Coroner.

The ice where Goings went through was roughly two inches thick. Indiana Conservation Officers would like to remind the public not to go out on ice less than four inches thick, and to regularly check the thickness of the ice by drilling holes as you go.
