(UNDATED) - Residents all over Indiana will show their support for the fight against heart disease and stroke in women by wearing red on Friday, February 5 - National Wear Red Day.

Part of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women movement, Wear Red Day focuses the nation's attention on heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women in America. Women and men throughout the country will be wearing red sweaters, red dresses, red ties or red dress pins to show their support of this movement to save women's lives.

Wear Red Day kicks off American Heart Month, an annual celebration in February that began in 1964 to urge Americans to join the battle against heart disease. A presidential proclamation each year pays tribute to researchers, physicians, public health education professionals and volunteers for their tireless efforts in preventing, treating, and researching heart disease.

Mortality rates from heart disease have dropped more than 50 percent in the last 30 years thanks to years of research and advancements in treatment, however, 1 in 3 deaths are still the result of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. By wearing red, Hoosiers raise awareness that 80 percent of cardiac events are preventable by making healthy lifestyle choices.

Throughout central Indiana, Hoosiers can show their support for Wear Red Day by posting pictures to social media with the hashtag #IndyGoRed.
