(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana will not increase its minimum wage this year.
State Senator Karen Tallian authored Senate Bill 41 (SB41). If passed it would have boosted Indiana's minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour.
"The sad thing is that in Indiana right now, we have people who work 40 hours a week jobs making minimum wage, and they're still below the poverty level," she says.
Tallian acknowledged passing SB41 would be difficult, but the bill never got a committee hearing. Sen. Phil Boots, R-Crawfordsville, who chairs the Senate Pensions & Labor Committee, believes it's unnecessary for legislators to take action on the issue.
According to United States Department of Labor, Indiana is one of the fourteen states with minimum wage rates at the same level as the federal minimum wage of $7.25.
"There are too many people in the republican senate who don't believe in having a minimum wage at all and it's a very difficult thing to push," Tallian says.
Tallian has filed a minimum wage bill every year for the past five years.
