(INDIANAPOLIS) - While people in many states are bracing for the return of a three-month limit on food stamps for many, the provision ended last year in Indiana.
The three-month limit for able-bodied adults on benefits from the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program was waived during the Great Recession as part of the stimulus program.
Those waivers are ending in many states this spring after the expiration of the stimulus.
Marni Lemons is a spokeswoman for the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. She said the Indiana waiver ended last fall because the state's unemployment rate was too low to qualify. Unemployment was below 5 percent for much of the year.
About 50,000 people were affected. Lemons said the agency provides employment and training services for them.
