(STATE HOUSE) - House Republicans don’t like the Senate’s road funding plan any better than the Senate likes theirs.
The House has taken flak for saying you should pay more in gas and cigarette taxes to pay for roads. But Speaker Brian Bosma says the four-year plan proposed by Governor Pence and passed by the Senate is a short-term fix -- and only really does a quarter as much as advertised, because legislatures can't force future legislatures to do anything. Nearly half the billion dollars in road spending Pence has proposed would be incorporated into the next two state budgets, in 2017 and 2019.
And Bosma questions the proposal to float a quarter-billion dollars in bonds. He says the state's been moving to a pay-as-you-go model.
The House and Senate have until March 14 to reach a final compromise.
