Twice As Many Guns Found This Year At Indianapolis International Airport

Last updated on Thursday, January 28, 2016

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Federal officials say agents found twice as many guns in carry-on bags at Indianapolis International Airport last year compared to 2014.

Transportation Security Administration spokesman Mark Howell says 50 guns were intercepted at the airport in 2015, compared to 25 in 2014. Howell attributes the rise to increases in travelers and the number of people who own firearms and are allowed to carry them. He also cited tighter checkpoint security.

Howell says almost all of the travelers who had guns in their carry-on luggage said they forgot about the weapons. He says they also said someone else packed their carry-on bags and they didn't know a weapon was there. TSA agents contact local police when guns are found. Travelers can face a misdemeanor charge.
