Teen Arrested In Lawrence Central High School Shooting

Last updated on Monday, January 25, 2016

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Lawrence police detectives have identified a 17-year-old Lawrence Central High School student as the suspect in Friday night’s shooting at the school that injured a 15-year-old boy.

Lawrence police officials say the suspect recently enrolled at the school. The teen was brought to Lawrence Police by a parent, where he admitted to firing several shots outside the gymnasium. Both the suspect and the victim told Lawrence Police that they and their friends have been involved in an ongoing dispute for over a year. The groups were involved in prior incidents, most of which occurred in the Castleton area.

The suspect, who was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center, has been preliminarily charged with Criminal Recklessness with a Firearm, Possession of a Handgun with No License on School Property, and Dangerous Possession of a Firearm. All of those charges are Level 5 felonies. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make a formal charging decision early next week.

Detectives credit the joint efforts between Lawrence police officers and school security for the quick identification and apprehension of the suspect.

The school district is now working with Lawrence Police to review and possibly modify their current security protocols for extracurricular activities. Once they finalize and implement any changes, they'll be sharing the details with the public.
