(HUNTINGTON CO.) - Indiana State Police is investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash which occurred following a vehicle pursuit by police early this morning.

Preliminary investigation by Sergeant Tom Merkling indicated that a pickup truck had sped away from where it had been stopped by the Huntington County Sheriff Department on U.S. 24 near Parkview Huntington Hospital.

With the deputy in pursuit, the truck traveled northbound on Ridgeline Road and had stopped near the intersection with Hauenstein Road where its passenger exited the vehicle.

The vehicle then continued north on Ridgeline Road for approximately one-half mile north of Hauenstein Road before it left the east side of the road, struck a large tree head-on and caught fire.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is continuing at this time as identities of all involved are being verified and appropriate family notifications are made.

More information will be released at a later time as these processes are completed.
