(INDIANAPOLIS) - Operator error is the term police are using right now to describe Tuesday’s school bus accident that left a principal dead.
Right now, IMPD says there is no evidence that the bus driver was drunk or on drugs at Amy Beverland Elementary School. That's pending toxicology tests, which are mandatory for any school bus driver involved in a wreck in which someone dies.
Police say they still haven't figured out how the bus, which apparently was parked, took off, jumped a curb and hit principal Susan Jordan. She die and two students were injured, though the bus driver told investigators Jordan pushed kids out of the way before she was hit.
All Lawrence Township Schools are closed today, as everyone in the district deals with the loss of Jordan.
She was 69, had been principal at Amy Beverland for 22 years, and was called a legend by superintendent Shawn Smith and just about everyone else who knew her.
Roughly 1,000 attended a prayer vigil for Jordan Wednesday morning at St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church.
Jordan's kids and teachers will go back to school tomorrow.
