Police Looking For Two Suspects, Two Injured In Palmyra Shooting

Last updated on Thursday, January 14, 2016

(PALMYRA) - Police are searching for two suspects after a shooting in Palmyra.

Police were at the home of Ralph and Rebecca Thomas for nine hours after the newly wed couple was shot Wednesday morning. The two victims were flown to University Hospital and Ralph is fighting for his life.

WDRB reported, Rebecca called 911 and was conscious when emergency crews arrived.

But by the time police arrived, the suspects, Travis Fentress and Tara Vanwinkle were long gone. Officials believe they drove away in a white vehicle.

"Right now we have a white male by the name of Travis Fentress, along with a white female by the name of Tara Van Winkle," said Daran Hodges, a chief deputy with the Harrison County Sheriff's Department. "My team is currently out hunting those individuals."

Ralph Thomas was shot in the head. His wife was shot through the shoulder and the bullet was lodged in her jaw.

Police do not know the circumstances of the shooting or how the suspects and victims knew each other. Police say Fentress has served time in prison. A warrant has since been issued for his arrest, but not for Vanwinkle.

In a town and a neighborhood where shootings don't happen often, those who live near the victims are taking extra safety measures.

Neighbors tell us the couple was recently married and two children lived in the house with them. Police say those children were in school at the time of the shooting.

With two suspects on the run, neighbors are feeling anxious.

One resident who lives across the street says he has noticed commotion at the house house before.

"A couple times I think it's been a police car there and there was an ambulance car there," said Bill Jenks.

But others in the area, like Sizemore, are concerned for their safety.

"Well if they've done something like that to do somebody else they might come in on us too," said Sizemore. "You never know."

Authorities are asking anyone with any information about the suspects' whereabouts to call the Harrison County Police Department at 812-738-2195.
