(INDIANAPOLIS) - A new bill in Indiana, which seems to target people who identify as transgender, would make it a crime for people to use a bathroom that isn’t labeled their birth gender.
14 News reports, Wyatt Squires always knew he was transgender, but didn't tell his family and friends until last year. He says this is just another hurdle in his journey.
"I have to wake up every day wondering who is going to call me by my right name, and now I also have to worry about if I go to the bathroom," he said.
Wyatt says he already tries to avoid using public bathrooms, but this bill comes with a hefty fine of up to $5,000 and the possibility of a year in jail.
A town hall was held at Central Library in Evansville on Wednesday to talk about the legislative session.
John Blair, who facilitated the town hall, says many of the bills being introduced this session aren't in align with what many Hoosiers would like to see.
The legislative session began Tuesday and will go on until March 10.
