(KNOX CO.) - A group of advocacy organizations, including Citizens Action Coalition, Save the Valley, Sierra Club, and Valley Watch, announced a modified settlement that was filed at the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission regarding Duke Energy's Edwardsport integrated gasification combined cycle plant in Knox County, Ind.

The Indiana Association for Community Economic Development is excited to announce it is a named implementation partner to receive $500,000 to fund solar projects of less than 0.5 megawatts for community, educational, religious and nonprofit organizations and/or low-income residential customers in Duke Energy Indiana's service territory.

IACED will offer technical and financial assistance to its members and other community partners to install solar energy projects.

Solar Uniting Neighbors was developed in partnership with Sustainable Catalyst Partners. IACED Executive Director Andy Fraizer said, "Sustainability is the capacity to endure. IACED members and partners provide this critical capacity to build vibrant communities and resilient families. Through this additional investment in solar generation, communities and residents reduce air pollution, grow the local economy and preserve natural systems. The SUN program puts community economic development values into action. IACED believes investing in solar photovoltaics will help spur innovation, investment and create jobs in local communities."

Goals of the Solar Uniting Neighbors program include:

  • Leverage investments in solar panels by project sponsors.
  • Remove capital cost barriers to the acquisition and installation of solar photovoltaics.
  • Lower energy costs for transformative community economic development projects.
  • Generate cost off-setting energy credits for surplus electricity production.
  • Create thought leaders in the benefits of solar energy capture - community sustainability and resiliency--and build capacity for solar photovoltaics in service area communities.
