Man Fatally Shot Self, After Opening Fire On Police At Hospital

Last updated on Monday, December 21, 2015

(HUNTINGTON) - State Police say a man apparently fatally shot himself outside a northeastern Indiana hospital after opening fire on officers.

Police said Saturday 34-year-old Raul Martinez III of Huntington drove an 18-year-old woman with gunshot wounds to her legs to Parkview Huntington Hospital after calling 911 Friday night.

The hospital was on lockdown and Huntington police were waiting when Martinez pulled up outside the emergency room in the city about 25 miles southwest of Fort Wayne.

Police say Martinez left his vehicle and fired at the officers. They returned fire, inflicting a nonfatal gunshot wound to Martinez's hip before he suffered a fatal gunshot head wound.

Huntington County's coroner says everything points to that wound being self-inflicted.

Police say no one else was injured. The wounded woman's condition wasn't immediately known.
