(INDIANAPOLIS) - You still can’t buy alcohol on Sundays, but the Indiana Alcohol and Tobacco Commission (ATC) announced you can buy alcohol on Christmas.
Although many businesses are closed on Christmas, restaurants, bars, liquor stores and grocery stores that are open will be allowed to sell alcohol to you.
Governor Mike Pence previously signed a bill that removed a provision prohibiting the sale of alcohol from 3 a.m. December 25 to 7 a.m. December 26. That bill took effect in July.
This is the first Christmas Day that Hoosiers will be able to buy alcohol on since Prohibition, according to our partners at the IndyStar.
This year, Christmas falls on a Friday. Next year, it falls on a Sunday.
The ATC issued a statement Tuesday:
Effective July 01, 2015, alcoholic beverages can be sold and dispensed for on premise consumption Sunday through Saturday from 7:00 a.m. local time until 3:00 a.m. the following day, including Christmas Day. Carry-out of alcoholic beverages for consumption off the licensed premise is not allowed on Sundays.
Indiana State Excise Corporal Brandon Thomas, clarifying further:
"If Christmas falls on a Sunday, bars, restaurants and other locations that sell alcoholic beverages for on-premise consumption would still be able to do so. Liquor stores, convenience stores, grocery stores, and other retailers that sell carry out would not."
