(EVANSVILLE) - Don Mattingly has donated money to go towards a new AstroTurf field for the Challenger Baseball League.

WFIE report, the field will cost around $100,000. With Mattingly's donation, they are three quarters of the way towards their goal.

City Council zeroed out Challenger League Baseball back in October, but they retaliated by revving up their donation engine, accelerating from zero to $75,000 in just two months.

"We knew we that we were getting some type of donation, but obviously I didn't know that it was to the magnitude of $25,000," said President Matt Pokorney.

They were in shock. Don Mattingly threw them a curveball.

"I'd like to say we hit it out of the park with Don Mattingly, but no one hits it out of the park with Don Mattingly," said Pokorney.

The league says that the turf is vital for the players.

"For the Challenger League program, if it rains for ten minutes, that game is over, due to the fact that the kids and the wheelchairs the walkers, children in crutches, they can't maneuver over the soft ground."

With Don Mattingly and the community all in the same dugout, Evansville youth baseball will always remain Challenger strong.
